Former chair of US House Foreign Affairs Committee visits battlefield in Ukraine – photos

Republican Congressman Michael McCaul, chairman emeritus of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, has visited the battlefield during his current trip to Ukraine, becoming the first member of Congress to do so.

Details: Speaking about his meeting with McCaul in Kyiv on 10 July, Andrii Sybiha noted that he is the first member of Congress to visit the battlefield during the full-scale war.

"I thanked Chairman McCaul for his steadfast leadership, unwavering personal support for Ukraine, and for visiting the front line, becoming the first member of the US Congress to do so during the war," the foreign minister said.

Sybiha did not provide any details about when and where McCaul's trip to the front line took place, and McCaul himself has not yet commented on it.

"We followed up on the recent meeting between President Zelenskyy and President Trump in Ankara and discussed further Ukraine-US defence cooperation, with a particular focus on air defence and drones. We also coordinated our next joint steps to strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities, reinforce our shared security and increase pressure on Russia," Sybiha added.

Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk said that during his meeting with McCaul in Kyiv, they discussed the outcomes of the NATO summit for Ukraine, including the US's political decision to grant Ukraine a licence to produce Patriot systems. Stefanchuk also spoke about the battlefield situation and the needs of the Ukrainian army and stressed the importance of deepening defence cooperation between Ukraine and the US and increasing sanctions pressure on Russia.
