Ukrainian Consulate General condemns attack on Polish woman by Ukrainian man in Wrocław

Ukraine's Consulate General in Wrocław has condemned an incident in which a Polish woman sustained serious injuries and a Ukrainian man was detained by police on suspicion of involvement in the attack.

Quote: "We strongly condemn all acts of violence and aggression, regardless of the nationality of the perpetrator or the victim. Anyone who commits a crime must be held accountable in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Poland."

Details: The Consulate General reiterated that Ukrainians living in Poland have enjoyed the support and solidarity of Polish society since the very first days of Russia's full-scale aggression.

"Every Ukrainian citizen is obliged to respect the laws, traditions and social norms of the country that has provided refuge to millions of Ukrainians and continues to support Ukraine," it said.

However, the diplomatic mission noted that the vast majority of Ukrainian citizens in Poland are law-abiding, work, study, pay taxes and contribute to the development of local communities.

Quote: "Individual criminal acts cannot and must not cast a shadow over the entire Ukrainian community. Anyone who breaks the law must be aware that they will inevitably be held accountable for their actions.

We extend our sympathies to the victim and wish her a speedy recovery. We hope for a comprehensive, objective and impartial investigation into this case by the Polish law enforcement authorities."

• On 1 August, an 18-year-old Ukrainian national attacked a Polish woman in Wrocław. He was subsequently detained by the police.
• In Wrocław, a group of Polish men recently attacked a young Ukrainian couple, reportedly after hearing their accent. The perpetrators have been remanded in custody for three months.
• In response, Poland's Interior Ministry stressed that such actions would be met with an appropriate law enforcement response. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also called on President Karol Nawrocki to "break his silence" on the matter.
