Germany advises against travelling to Ukraine ahead of Independence Day

Germany's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised German citizens not to travel to Ukraine in the near future because of the risk of Russian attacks in the run-up to Independence Day.

Details: On 15 August, Germany's Foreign Ministry updated its travel advice for Ukraine. Among the updates, the ministry advised against travelling to Ukraine.

Quote: "Fighting is continuing in Ukraine. Russian airstrikes using missiles, cruise missiles and drones take place almost daily; all parts of the country may be affected. In connection with Independence Day on 24 August 2026, intensified attacks on infrastructure, such as energy infrastructure and transport hubs, as well as civilian targets, cannot be ruled out."

Background:

• In early August, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová said that Russia is trying to break Kyiv with its constant ballistic missile strikes and that "war can never become normal".
• On 5 August, Latvia's Foreign Minister Baiba Braže said she had spent the previous night in Kyiv in a shelter and expressed condolences to the Ukrainians who had lost loved ones that night.
