Switzerland to provide around US$730,000 for preservation of Kyiv's Caves Monastery

Switzerland will provide approximately US$730,000 for the preservation and reconstruction of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (the Monastery of the Caves), whose Dormition Cathedral was damaged by a Russian strike two months ago.

Details: Gerber recalled that the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra recently marked its 975th anniversary and announced that Switzerland will provide CHF 600,000 (approximately US$730,000) through UNESCO to protect and reconstruct the site.

The official attended the anniversary celebrations and noted that he has had productive conversations with Ukrainian Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna and UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha thanked Switzerland for the decision.

"While Russia seeks to destroy Ukraine's cultural heritage and erase our identity, our partners stand with us in protecting and preserving it for future generations. I am grateful to Switzerland for this tangible expression of solidarity," Sybiha wrote on X (Twitter).

Background: In June, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Switzerland would help repair the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra following damage caused by a Russian strike on 15 June.
