IAEA receives information about drone explosion at bus stop used by staff of Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said it received information from the director of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) about a drone exploding at a bus stop used by plant staff. One person has been killed and 16 injured.

Details: IAEA said the Russian-appointed director of the occupied ZNPP had told the IAEA team that a drone had exploded at around 06:00 on 18 August at a bus stop used by plant employees.

One person was reportedly killed and 16 injured, three of whom sustained serious injuries.

The IAEA also received information about attacks on the plant's industrial zone, but there were no reports of damage that would affect the plant's nuclear safety or security.

Quote from the IAEA: "DG Rafael Grossi solemnly calls on military commanders responsible for these actions as well as all others aiming on nuclear power plants and/or their staff to put an immediate stop to these unacceptable actions which are in absolute contradiction to the 7 pillars and the 5 principles and constitute great risks to nuclear safety and security during the conflict."

Background:

• At the end of May, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said that Russian claims about a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian-occupied ZNPP had emerged on the eve of an IAEA Board of Governors meeting and called on members not to support granting Russia a seat on the board.
• Ukraine's defence forces previously denied Russian claims that a Ukrainian drone had struck power unit No. 6 of the Russian-occupied ZNPP.
