European Commission assesses prospects for wartime elections in Ukraine

European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper said on 20 August that it is up to Ukraine itself to decide when to hold elections, but that this must be based on its Constitution and legal framework and meet the relevant democratic standards.

Background:
- In an address on 18 August, former Ukrainian defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov called for a lawful, safe and realistic mechanism to be found that would enable elections to be held in Ukraine.
- European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said in February that talking about holding elections in Ukraine during the war is a "cynical trap".
- The German government has also said it believes that elections in Ukraine are only possible in conditions of stable peace.
