Details: Lavrov criticised NATO's Arctic Sentry operation, launched in February 2026, claiming that it was aggressive in nature and "increases risks".

"Intensified military preparations are taking place in the immediate vicinity of our northern borders. Large-scale exercises of an aggressive nature are being conducted with the involvement of countries from outside the region, and new elements of NATO's command structure are emerging," the Russian foreign minister wrote.

"Such military activity in the Far North poses direct threats to Russia's security and increases the risk of incidents that could provoke an armed confrontation with potentially catastrophic consequences," he claimed.

Lavrov added that NATO "wants to turn the Arctic into a new front of confrontation in order to contain the development of our country and its like-minded partners".
