Trump envoy Witkoff reveals what US sought to achieve during visits to Kyiv and Moscow
US special envoy Steve Witkoff has stated that the task of the American delegation which visited Kyiv and Moscow over the past two days was to "bring the sides closer together".

Details: Witkoff stated that "relationships are critical in terms of solving" wars like this.
"If you don't have relationships with both sides and you have poor communication, then you probably have very, very little chance of getting to a peaceful resolution," he said.
Witkoff said Ukraine and Russia "have to come to a resolution".
"Both sides have to come to a resolution here, and my job and Jared's job, together, is to bring the parties together, to narrow the issues between them, to create good communication channels, and hopefully we began that process constructively in the last 48 hours, and we're confident that there'll be a good resolution here," he added.
Background:
- On the same day, US President Donald Trump's special envoy Jared Kushner said there is no guarantee the war in Ukraine will end by winter, but the US is working to create the right conditions for this.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine, Witkoff, Kushner, and the national security advisers from France, the UK and Germany agreed during the talks in Kyiv to meet again in the same format in the near future.
- Zelenskyy said that three rounds of talks were held on 6 September, all of which were "very substantive", focusing on possible parameters for ending the war and short-term support for Ukraine.
