Trump's envoys leave Kyiv

US President Donald Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner left Kyiv by Ukrzaliznytsia train on the night of 6-7 September.

Details: Ukrzaliznytsia also posted photos of the two diplomats on the platform at the capital's railway station.

Background:

• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced at approximately 14:20 that negotiations with Witkoff and Kushner had begun.
• Zelenskyy said earlier that Ukraine had made preparations to meet Witkoff and Kushner at the airport, but Russia had effectively prevented them from flying in. The previous day, 5 September, the special envoys had held talks in Moscow.
• Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, said Putin told the US envoys during Saturday's talks that he is confident that his war objectives will be achieved. The White House described the talks as "substantive" and announced that the next steps will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
