Ukraine provides NATO with list of urgent air defence needs ahead of Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting

An extraordinary meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council at the level of permanent representatives has taken place at NATO headquarters in Brussels, during which Ukraine presented a list of its priority and urgent needs for air and missile defence systems.

Details: The meeting, convened at Ukraine's request, took place ahead of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (also known as the Ramstein format) meeting on 8 September. Strengthening Ukraine's air defences will be the central issue on its agenda.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte chaired the meeting.

Serhii Boiev, Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister for European Integration, and Brigadier General Serhii Sobko, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, presented the allies with a detailed assessment of current aerial threats.

The Ukrainian side provided a list of its priority and urgent needs for air defence systems.

Following the meeting, Ukraine called on the allies to rapidly provide additional air and defence assets directly related to protecting the lives of Ukrainians.

Ukraine also called on its partners to mobilise by the end of the year the resources needed to meet NATO's declared target of €70 billion in military support for Ukraine.

Background:

On 6 September, Ukraine's Defence Ministry reported that Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara had discussed preparations for the Ramstein meeting during a phone call with Rutte.
The previous meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group took place at NATO headquarters in Brussels on 18 June. It was co-chaired by the United Kingdom and Germany.
Following that meeting, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced that Ukraine would receive a three-digit number of air-to-air missiles from German stocks, as well as plans for the joint production of unmanned ground systems.
