EU to propose new security meeting format for leaders including Ukraine

The European Union will propose creating a European Security Council involving the UK, Canada, Norway, Ukraine and possibly other countries.

Quote: "For a long time, we have discussed a leaders' format focused on the security of our continent. With partners like Canada, Norway, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and others involved."

Details: Von der Leyen stressed that the issue "is even more urgent now, given the nature and scale of the risks at play".

"This is why we will set out our ideas to make a European Security Council a reality," the European Commission president said.

Background:

• Von der Leyen also said that together with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, she will present a new EU security strategy designed to complement Article 4 of the NATO Treaty.
• For Ukraine, the European Commission president promised the procurement of US Patriot interceptor missiles and the creation of a joint EU-Ukraine missile defence system based on the Freyja project.
• In her State of the Union address, von der Leyen also proposed making Canada an associated member of the EU.
