French far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has said that French agriculture would lose out if Ukraine joined the European Union.

Details: Le Pen said that if Ukraine joined the EU, France would be the first country to suffer as a result.

She added that there are two reasons for this.

"Not only would we face fierce unfair competition, but the share of the Common Agricultural Policy budget allocated to French agriculture would also be considerably reduced," Le Pen explained.

Background:

  • Presenting a draft of new approaches to enlargement on 6 October, European Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said that Ukraine could be given agricultural provisions that differ from those applied to other candidate countries.
  • The Ukrainian government said that Ukraine cannot accept an EU membership model that would involve permanently restricting the sale of certain types of food products to the bloc.
  • Meanwhile, Vsevolod Chentsov, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, said that Ukraine considers the full integration of its agricultural sector into the EU's single market to be the starting point, while transitional mechanisms should be justified, proportionate and time-limited.
