Law enforcement officers said the drone crashed and exploded in a forest on the outskirts of the village of Geamăna. The police received a report of the incident at around 22:20, after which groups of military personnel and bomb disposal experts were dispatched to the site.

The police confirmed that the crash site has been cordoned off and specialists are inspecting the object to establish the circumstances of the incident.

Law enforcement officers have urged citizens not to approach or touch any suspicious debris or objects and to avoid the area until the inspections are completed.

Background:

  • The Moldovan authorities have been establishing protective zones at checkpoints on the border with Ukraine where border post employees and citizens present at the border could take shelter from potential drone strikes.
  • On 5 October, operations at the Palanca-Maiaky-Udobne border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova were suspended after a projectile fired during Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure ricocheted and struck a bus and a border control booth.
