Ukraine Mulling Sum of Crimea Court Claim Against Russia
The final amount of damages Ukraine will sue Russia for in the European Court of Human Rights for occupation of Crimea is to be determined after the Court’s decision, the First Deputy Minister for Justice Natalia Sevostianova reported in a press conference in Kyiv.
She reminded that Ukraine filed five claims against Russia with the European Court of Human Rights, starting from 2014. The claims contain evidence, including security sensitive information. "As some of the materials come the war zone, the ECHR closed this case from the public," Sevostianova noted.
Ukraine’s claims were given a priority. They encompass violations of various rights committed by Russia, including the right to life, freedom from torture and property rights.
The Deputy Minister highlighted that Ukraine was seeking return of Crimea and to charge Russia with not letting Ukraine use its property in Crimea. She underlined that the tentative amount to be requested from Russia numbered up to ₴ 1 trillion, while the exact amount will be determined after the Court decision.
"When we win this action, we will proceed to legal redress and engage international experts to determine the exact amount of damage that Ukraine suffered," Sevostianova summarized.
