State Emergency Service on Sumykhimprom shelling: Ammonia leak was insignificant, no danger for Sumy residents

After the shelling of the premises of PJSC Sumykhimprom, a large chemical manufacturing plant, there was a leakage of ammonia, which proved to be insignificant. There is no threat to the population of Sumy.

Details: The premises of the Sumykhimprom plant in the city of Sumy was shelled at 03:55 on 21 March, damaging a 50-tonne ammonia tank.

As of 05:00, there was a slight leakage of ammonia.

At 07:15, the leak was contained, and units of the State Emergency Service began to also contain the ammonia cloud.

Update: At 07:49, the ammonia emission accident on PJSC Sumykhimprom’s premises was neutralised.

Plant workers have started routine work to restore the technological processes of the plant.

There is no threat to the residents of Sumy.

No victims have been reported.

The SES deployed 5 personnel and 4 appliances to contain the damage from the shelling and eliminate the danger.

Background: Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration Dmytro Zhyvytskyy said that as of 04:30 on Monday, 21 March, the Sumykhimprom plant, located on the outskirts of Sumy, was affected by an ammonia leak with a radius of about 2.5 km.

Given the wind direction, the village of Novoselytsia was under threat, he said.
