The mayor of Chernihiv: The city is completely destroyed, less than half of the population remains

IRYNA BALACHUK — SATURDAY, MARCH 26, 2022, 15:14

As of March 26, less than half of Chernihiv's residents are still in the city, and the city is completely destroyed - it is easier to count houses that remained untouched than destroyed ones.

"The city is torn to pieces. It is easier to count the houses that have survived. More than 200 civilians have been killed. Now there are about 120-130 thousand citizens in Chernihiv (about 285-290 thousand lived before the war - ed.) The city authorities are on the spot, everyone is working, supporting our army. Nobody is going to surrender the city. "

Details: The mayor added that Chernihiv was currently in an operational blockade, the Russian army having deliberately destroyed the bridge connecting the city with the Kyiv direction.

The city is unable to arrange humanitarian corridors or evacuate people who have been injured. The pedestrian bridge is currently under constant crossfire, and it is dangerous to transport goods across it because it could collapse.

Atroshenko noted that the local authorities plan to evacuate people who were seriously injured, and who cannot be operated on on the spot. Currently, these number 44 people (both military and civilians, including three children).

The mayor added that there is no electricity in the city, but water is delivered by all available methods, and everything that can be repaired is being repaired.

Atroshenko also said that volunteers are making extraordinary efforts to be of help, and providing people with everything they need.
