Quote: "I talked to Justin Trudeau and thanked him for the continuous and strong support of Ukraine’s defence.

I have once again stressed that the international position in relation to the sanctions against Russia must be consistently principled.

After the terrorist attacks on Vinnytsia, Mykolaiv, Chasiv Yar, and other [Ukrainian cities], the pressure [on Russia] has to be strengthened, not relaxed."

Earlier:

  • Last week, the Canadian government agreed to make an exception to the sanctions against Russia and send a North Stream turbine which has been serviced in Canada to Germany and reduce the risk that Russia might not resume the supply of gas via the Nord Stream pipeline after the completion of the planned repairs.
  • Ukraine urged Canada to not give in to the Russian blackmail. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Canadian envoy to Ukraine for a meeting.
  • Justin Trudeau called the decision "very difficult" and made assurances that Canada will continue supporting Ukraine.
  • The Canadian parliament initiated a special session during which the ministers responsible for the decision are expected to explain its rationale. The Ukrainian World Congress, an international coordination assembly of all Ukrainian public organisations in diaspora, filed a lawsuit in Canada in relation to the government’s decision.
