The Directorate of Intelligence believes that the killing of Ukrainian prisoners in Olenivka, Donetsk Oblast, was organised by the Wagner Group [a Russian private military company] on the personal instructions of Yevgeny Prigozhin, without coordination with the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Quote from Intelligence: "The explosions in Olenivka are a deliberate provocation and an undeniable act of terrorism by the occupying forces side. According to the available information, they were carried out by mercenaries from the Wagner Group private military company (PMC) under the personal command of the nominal owner of the specified PMC, Yevheny Prigozhin. The organization and execution of the terrorist attack was not agreed with the leadership of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation".

Details: According to the Main Directorate of Intelligence, the explosion was carried out to cover up the theft of funds allocated to the maintenance of Ukrainian prisoners. On 1 August, a commission from Russia was due to arrive at the colony to check the expenditure of the allocated funds and the conditions of detention of prisoners. However, the actual condition of the building did not meet the requirements, so the "problem" was eliminated by destroying the premises with the Ukrainians inside. The second goal of the terrorist attack was to increase social tension around Ukraine, taking into account the public interest in the captured Heroes of Azovstval.

Intelligence added that the building was specially equipped to hold prisoners from Azovstal. Work on the building ended 2 days ago, after which some of the detained Ukrainian defenders were transferred there.

Background:

  • On 29 July, Russian-aligned propaganda media reported on the shelling of the penal colony in Olenivka, Donetsk Oblast, where Ukrainian prisoners were held. Propagandists claimed that there were at least 53 Ukranians dead.
  • The General Staff of Ukraine denied the accusations of the Russian Federation that the attack was carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the General Staff, the Russians tried to hide the torture and murder of prisoners.
  • Azov units announced a hunt for those who were involved in the killing of prisoners of war in Olenivka.
