Details: According to Russian occupation authorities, the ceremony in the drama theatre was interrupted due to shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The guests were evacuated to a bomb shelter. Russian media claim that two people were killed and five were injured. The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine informed Ukrainska Pravda that they do not have information on the shelling of Donetsk.

Oleksii Honcharenko, a member of Ukrainian Parliament, reported that the drama theatre and Donbas Palace, a nearby hotel, were hit. According to Honcharenko, Kadyrovites [Chechen paramilitaries supporting the Russian Armed Forces] were living in the hotel.

Mykhailo Podoliak, the advisor of the Office of the President of Ukraine, denied the accusations of the occupiers that the attack on the centre of Donetsk was carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Quote from Podoliak: "Only the Russians themselves – or the corps of the people's militias of unrecognised criminal republics – are hitting Donetsk. Therefore, there is no sense in us launching strikes on any events in Donetsk.

All these explosions just go to show [what Russian forces think]: look what beasts are on the other side, let's mobilise more intensively and go on killing Ukrainians."

Reference: Until 2014, Olga Kachura served in the police of Horlivka, and then switched to the side of the occupiers. "Korsa" [Kachura’s call sign] commanded the MLRS division and gave orders for the shelling of Donetsk Oblast, which has led to the mass fatalities.

Background:

  • On 3 August, it was reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine killed Olga Kachura, the odious artillery commander of the so-called "DPR" [Donetsk People’s Republic] with the call sign "Korsa".
  • Prior to this, the court of the city of Chernivtsi sentenced Korsa in absentia to 12 years of imprisonment for participation in terrorist activities.
