Aleksandr Lukashenko, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, said that he would bring up the issue of locating Russian nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus in case the country is attacked, or if an American nuclear weapon is detected in Poland.

Quote: "Why I asked Putin about this [supplying Belarus with nuclear weapons - ed.] at all is because once before we let go of nuclear weapons for free. We had the most modern Topols [Russian-made intercontinental ballistic missiles], which are now in service with the Russian Federation. Russia is our ally, we are close and united, and they will protect us. But, well, today we are the leaders of our countries. And [what about] tomorrow? So he asks me: ‘What do you suggest?’ And I respond: ‘A tactical nuclear weapon’.

Not now, not tomorrow, not the day after tomorrow, but if Belarus is ever attacked, if Americans locate their nuclear weapons in Poland, then we should have it…We agreed on this, on modernization of a few of our planes that are ready to carry tactical nuclear weapons.

We are not acting on it because Americans stopped – they are not bothering Poland with their nuclear weapons".

Background:

  •  On Wednesday, Lukashenko expressed his gratitude to Joseph Stalin, the Soviet dictator, and Lavrentii Beria, the people’s commissar for the Internal Affairs of the USSR and the organiser of Stalin’s repressions, for nuclear weapons.
  • Earlier, Lukashenko claimed that Belarusian Su planes have been remodelled so that they can carry nuclear weapons, and added that the Command designated the targets that will be hit in case the West attacks Belarus.
