Details: According to the investigation, a 48-year-old man from Balakliia colluded with representatives of the occupying forces and assumed the position of "chief" of the so-called "people's militia of Balakliia". In particular, from April to September, he recruited other workers, managed their activities, and organised joint patrols with the Russian occupying forces near critical infrastructure facilities.

According to the Office of the General Prosecutor, in September, the man tried to run away from Balakliia to the occupied Luhansk Oblast; however, he was detained by Ukrainian law enforcement officers in Kupiansk after the city was liberated. The ID card that the occupiers issued to the traitor was valid only until late 2022.

The man was notified of suspicion of collaborationism (Part 7 of Article 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The precautionary measure is custody without the alternative of bail. The culprit faces a sentence from 12 to 15 years of imprisonment.

Background:

  • Balakliia became the first city in Kharkiv Oblast to be officially liberated from the Russian occupation. On 8 September, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the city of Balakliia in Kharkiv Oblast had been liberated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  • The Ukrainian police have checked 123,000 residents of liberated territories for cooperation with Russian invaders; 8,500 of these people were brought to the Security Service of Ukraine for further verification.
