The Ukrainian government continues to insist on the importance of recognising the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism despite the position of the United States.

Quote from Kuleba: "We have demanded, are demanding, and will continue to demand that Russia be recognised as a state sponsor of terrorism. The fact that the Biden administration is not currently prepared to approve this decision does not mean that it will never be approved. We will continue working on ensuring that Russian be recognised for what it really is."

Details: Kuleba added that since 24 February Ukrainian diplomacy "has experienced the situation whereby partners first say no, but later approve certain decisions, multiple times, and not only with the US.

This has happened in relation to the supply of various types of weapons and the introduction of certain sanctions. That’s why I am convinced that we will continue working with the United States [to ensure that Russia is recognised as a state sponsor of terrorism]," the Foreign Minister stressed.

Kuleba also thanked the US for everything that the country "has done and continues to do for Ukraine" and stressed the crucial role of President Biden’s leadership in the process of providing aid to Ukraine. However, he added that "we will not back down from this particular issue and will continue insisting on what we think is right, because it really will be the right decision."

Background: Earlier on Tuesday, 6 September, US Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that declaring Russia a state sponsor of terrorism might result in a reduction of US aid for Ukraine and be detrimental to its humanitarian efforts in the country.

President Joe Biden had earlier announced that he did not support declaring Russia a state sponsor of terrorism.
