Almost 8,000 Ukrainian civilians killed by Russian aggression, 430 of them children

Almost 8,000 civilians, including 430 children, have been killed since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

Details: The ombudsman attended an online meeting with advisors from the embassies of EU member states, where he reported on the human losses that Ukraine has suffered in eight and a half months of war.

Lubinets stated that as a result of Russia’s full-scale armed aggression:   

  • 430 children have been killed;
  • 827 children have been wounded or injured;
  • 260 children are considered missing;
  • 10,570 children have been deported to Russia and temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

The ombudsman remarked that in total there are thousands of civilians dead, and millions of people have been forced to become refugees and have no proper access to water. Because of the war:

  • 7,938 civilians have been killed;
  • 10,897 people have been injured;
  • 14 million people have been left with no home;
  • 6.2 million people have been internally displaced;
  • 11.7 million people have become refugees or obtained temporary protection abroad;
  • 1.4 million people have been left with no access to water;
  • 4.6 million people have limited access to water.

Lubinets reported that the Russian army has destroyed 2,688 educational facilities, 311 beyond repair, and 786 kindergartens.

As a result of Russian attacks 680 tonnes of oil products have been burned. A total of US$37 billion worth of damage has been caused to the environment.

Lubinets added that 150,000-180,000 square metres of land has been contaminated with explosives, which corresponds to 25-30% of the territory of Ukraine, as well as nearly 14,000 square metres of Ukraine’s waters.
