Electricity is restored for 6 million Ukrainians in one day, but there are major problems with water - Zelenskyy

A day after the massive Russian missile attack, electricity has been restored for almost 6 million Ukrainians, but there are still major problems with the water supply.

"During the day, it was possible to restore the electricity supply to almost 6 million Ukrainians. Repair work is ongoing now and has been going on non-stop since yesterday's terrorist attack.

Of course, there is still a lot of work to do to stabilise the system. There are problems with the supply of heat and big problems with the supply of water. The most difficult situation is in the city of Kyiv and the oblast, Vinnytsia and the oblast, Lviv and the oblast. But there are, unfortunately, large-scale outages in many other oblasts: they include Dnipro and Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Volyn, Zhytomyr Oblast, Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, the city and oblast of Odesa, Poltava Oblast, Ternopil Oblast, Chernihiv Oblast, and other cities and oblasts."

Details: The President appealed to Ukraine’s international partners to provide a reliable air defence shield.

"Find an opportunity to give Ukraine reliable protection of the sky, a reliable air defence shield. You can do it. You can give protection to our people – one hundred percent protection from these Russian terrorist strikes.

When that happens, the main form of Russian terror – missile terror – will become simply impossible. And this will mean safety for Ukrainians, safety for millions of people and a strategic realignment of the entire military situation. The fewer opportunities Russia has for terror, the more opportunities we will have to restore and guarantee peace."

Background:

  • On 16 December, the Russians launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, firing 70 cruise missiles and 4 guided air missiles. 60 cruise missiles were shot down by air defence forces.
  • As a result of the strikes, several energy infrastructure facilities and residential buildings were damaged in Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.
  • In Kyiv, after the attack, the metro stopped running and there were electricity, water and heat supply outages. On Saturday morning, service was resumed on the Kyiv metro and the water supply was restored. However, a third of Kyiv residents remained without electricity.
