Background:

  • The Russians launched a large-scale missile attack on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure on 16 December. The occupiers fired 70 cruise missiles and four guided air-launched missiles; 60 missiles were shot down by the Ukrainian air defence forces. As a result of the strikes, several energy infrastructure facilities and residential buildings in Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts were hit.
  • Vitalii Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv, confirmed that there were explosions in the Holosiivskyi, Desnianskyi and Dniprovskyi districts of the capital. After the attack, the metro did not function in Kyiv, and there were also outages of electricity, water and heat supply.
  • The Kyiv Metro resumed operation on Saturday morning [17 December], and residents also got their water supply back. However, one third of Kyivans were still without electricity. As of Saturday evening, 75% of Kyiv residents had their heating supply back.
