Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov described Western tanks for Ukraine as an "iron fist" for breaking through the Russian defence lines and liberating the occupied territories.

Quote: "We will use them as a kind of metal fist, or iron fist, to break through our enemy's defence line."

Details: Reznikov added that Ukraine has to continue a counter offensive campaign on different fronts to liberate temporarily occupied territories.

In addition, Reznikov said Ukraine's "wish list" includes Western jet fighters, although the priority for Ukraine is air defence systems.

Quote: "We have to close our skies, protect our skies. That's the number one priority. Thereafter, we need to get more combat vehicles, tanks, artillery systems, UAVs and so on. We have the people, but we need the weapons."

Background:

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that after the decision on tanks, Ukraine should be supplied with aircraft, and this is an important task.
  • According to Zelensky, after the decision of Ukraine's partners to provide tanks, the key things are speed and volume: "the speed of training our military, the speed of supplying tanks to Ukraine. Volume of tank support". The president believes that we must form a tank fist, from whose blows tyranny will no longer rise.
  • Germany had announced that it would send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and approve the re-export of Leopards by third countries.
  • On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden confirmed his intention to transfer 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
