"At this time, we have no indication of a direct military threat by Russia against Moldova or Romania. More broadly, we support Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as its constitutionally guaranteed neutrality," Patel said during a briefing on Friday.

Background:

  • Two missiles launched from the Black Sea violated the airspace of Moldova during the large-scale Russian missile attack on Ukraine. Moldova summoned the Russian ambassador in connection with the incident.
  • Fragments of missiles have fallen on the border territory of Moldova multiple times during the previous attacks.
  • The Ukrainian side also claimed that Russian missiles crossed the airspace of Romania, a NATO member state, but the Romanian side did not officially confirm this.

Note: Moldova wants to criminalise missile attacks on Ukraine, during which Russian missiles also cross the airspace of Moldova. The very fact of the missile flight should be punished by imprisonment for a term of 3 to 12 years, and if the missile injures or kills a person, the punishment increases to 10–20 years.
