German Defence Minister announces "tank summit" for countries that send Leopards to Ukraine

Defence ministers of the countries that are forming an alliance regarding the transfer of Leopard tanks to Ukraine will have a meeting next week.

Quote from Pistorius: "We also have a joint project with Poland; that is, we will send Leopard 2A6 tanks, and Poland will send 2A4 tanks. And we have made an agreement with our counterpart Mariusz [Błaszczak - ed.] that we will meet next week together with Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defence of Ukraine, and we will invite those countries that are to form the Leopard tank coalition."

Details: Pistorius has said that the tank coalition is not completely formed yet. "New countries will join us. The goal is to gather as many countries as possible in this coalition," Pistorius added. 

Pistorius has recently visited Kyiv and declared that Berlin will send guided missiles, five Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns (SPAAG) and other equipment to Ukraine by the end of February 2023.

He has also pointed out that Ukraine will receive 100 main battle tanks of an older Leopard 2A6 version from a group of several European countries, and the Leopard 2A6 will arrive in Ukraine by the end of March

Background: On 25 January 2023, the German government announced that it would provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with Leopard 2 main battle tanks.

Moreover, Germany's Federal Security Council approved the supply of 178 Leopard 1 tanks from their industrial stocks to Ukraine.

Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defence of Ukraine, said after the meeting with his German counterpart in Kyiv that Ukraine should receive 80 Leopard 1 tanks by the end of the year, and the first two dozen had to arrive "by summer".
