Builders working in Moscow are recruited for war through threats – UK intelligence

UK Defence Intelligence suggests that Moscow has begun to require building companies to provide "volunteers" to participate in the war against Ukraine, threatening to terminate contracts.

Details: Moscow city authorities are likely to threaten building firms with termination of contracts if they do not fulfil quotas and do not find "volunteers" among employees to participate in the war against Ukraine, according to the intelligence report. One company was allegedly ordered to find 30 volunteers by the end of August.

Such measures are likely to primarily affect representatives of national minorities from poorer regions of Russia, since they are many among those who work in the building industry in the capital.

UK Defence Intelligence believes that these measures are most likely being carried out with the tacit consent of the mayor of Moscow, who had previously tried to minimise the impact of the war on wealthier Muscovites, but at the same time demonstrate support for the war.

A previous review noted that Russia's medical system was most likely unprepared for the influx of wounded from the front. Russia’s average losses during the months of a full-scale war against Ukraine has been estimated at about 400 soldiers per day.
