Russian Transport Ministry claims Crimean Bridge pillars are intact

The Russian Ministry of Transport has asserted that the pillars of the Crimean Bridge have not been destroyed but, rather, only the road surface on the bridge’s spans has allegedly been damaged.

Details: TASS reported that an examination of the bridge’s condition is ongoing.

Background:

  • On the night of 16-17 July, Sergey Aksyonov reported that an "emergency situation" had happened on the Crimean Bridge and that traffic was suspended.
  • Russian Telegram channels reported that a span of the bridge had "collapsed".
  • According to the Astra Telegram channel, at least two explosions were heard before the "collapse" of the Crimean Bridge span.
  • Veniamin Kondratiev, Governor of Russian Krasnodar Krai, called on residents of the region to refrain from travelling across the Crimean Bridge.
  • Due to the span destruction on the Crimean Bridge, the operation of the ferry crossing between the occupied peninsula and the Russian Krasnodar Krai has been stopped, and the movement of trains on the bridge has also been temporarily suspended.
