Details: The statement of claim states that during the audit, "systematic gross and insurmountable violations of the law" were allegedly found in the activities of the Sakharov Centre.

Accordingly, the court decided to exclude the Sakharov Centre from the Register of legal entities of the Russian Federation.

Background:

  • The Russian authorities recognised the Sakharov Centre as a "foreign agent" in 2014. At the end of 2022, it was fined RUB 5 million [approx. US$53,418 - ed.] under the protocols for the absence of marking "foreign agent". The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation declared the American organisation the Andrei Sakharov foundation "undesirable" in 2023.
  • The Public Commission for the Preservation of the Heritage of Academician Andrei Sakharov has existed since 1990. The Sakharov Centre, which was opened in 1996, organised meetings, exhibitions and lectures on human rights issues.
