President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that the mercenaries from the Wagner Group, without their leader, may pose a threat not only for Ukraine but for Russia, Belarus and Poland as well.

Quote: "I believe our troops have shown us that this [the Wagner Private Military Company (PMC) – ed.] is also an enemy.

There are about 20,000 – I think this is how many Wagnerites remain – 20,000 of men who cannot be controlled. We should think about who is at greater risk here – Ukraine, Belarus, Poland or maybe Russia. Nobody knows."

Details: Commenting on the alleged death of Yevgeniy Prigozhin, the Wagner PMC chief, Zelenskyy noted that there is "a court in The Hague or God’s Court, and Russia has an alternative, President Vladimir Putin".

In this way, Zelenskyy hinted that Putin was "punishing" Prigozhin for the failed mutiny attempt in June.

Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had nothing to do with the death of Yevgeniy Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner mercenaries, in Russia and added: "Everyone understands who is involved".

Background:

  • After the mutiny, a part of the Wagner Group led by Prigozhin settled in Belarus in a tent camp. Alexander Lukashenko held talks with the leader of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, and the latter allegedly accepted a proposal to stop the movement of his mercenaries in Russia. The "mercenaries" were not punished in Russia.
  • Prigozhin continued to fly to Russia. But after his visit to Africa and his return to the Russian Federation, Prigozhin's plane crashed, killing all 10 people on board.
