Russia has transferred elements of the new 25th Combined Arms Army to Ukraine, which it had planned to deploy only from December 2023.

Quote: "Elements of Russia’s new 25th Combined Arms Army (25 CAA) have highly likely deployed to Ukraine for the first time. The formation is likely focused on Luhansk Oblast in the north-east of the country," UK intelligence said.

Details: Russia announced the recruitment for the 25th Combined Arms Army in August 2023. It was stated that the 25th Combined Arms Arm would be deployed in Ukraine only from December 2023.

UK intelligence said it is likely that the units were transferred into the combat zone ahead of schedule because Russia is continuing to feel overstretched at the front and Ukraine is continuing its counteroffensive actions on three fronts.

However, there is a real possibility that Russia will try to use parts of the 25th Combined Arms Army to create a non-combat reserve force that will provide its command with greater operational flexibility.

Background:

  • UK intelligence reported earlier that a shortage of workers in Russia's non-defence industries has increased due to mobilisation and conscription.
