On 22 January, Roman Hrynkevych, the son of a scandalous Lviv businessman involved in the Ministry of Defence procurement case, was detained in Odesa.

Quote from Kostin: "I want to tell you some important news. Everyone remembers the recent high-profile case in which a Lviv businessman and his accomplices were served with a notice suspicion for supplying  the Armed Forces of Ukraine with low-quality clothing for UAH 1 billion (about US$26 million).

Four defendants are currently in custody. The fifth was detained in Odesa this morning while trying to organise a state border crossing. The fifth had been put on the wanted list."

Details: Kostin did not specify whether we are talking about Roman Hrynkevych. However, it was reported earlier that Hrynkevych is involved in the case and has been put on the wanted list.

Updated: The Prosecutor General's office said that he was detained by law enforcement officers at 06:50 (Kyiv time) while organising a trip outside the country.

According to the investigation, he left for Odesa approximately on 17 January and had been preparing to cross the state border and leave the country since then. The State Bureau of Investigation specified that Hrynkevych tried to hide in one of the EU countries. On 22 January, the detainee must be brought to court for a preventive measure to be chosen.

Background: 

  • On 29 December 2023, employees of the State Bureau of Investigation detained a Lviv businessman, one of the largest suppliers of the Ministry of Defence, who offered a bribe of US$500,000 to one of the heads of the main Investigation Department of the bureau in exchange for assistance in returning property seized from companies under his control during the investigation. According to Ukrainska Pravda’s sources, the businessman in question is Ihor Hrynkevych.
  • On 30 December 2023, a preventive measure was chosen for Hrynkevych in the form of detention with the possibility of bail in the amount of UAH 429.44 million (about US$11.2 million)
  • Hrynkevych's son stated that his family's activities took place under the current legislation, and the scandal has been fabricated.
  • On the afternoon of 11 January, the State Bureau of Investigation reported that as part of the investigation into the procurement of goods for the needs of the Ministry of Defence, searches were conducted at the residence and office of the Lviv businessman, as well as residential addresses of directors and offices of companies controlled by Hrynkevych. The process of seizing assets was initiated.
  • The National Agency of Ukraine for finding, tracing and management of assets derived from corruption and other crimes has shown the list of the wanted assets of Hrynkevych and his relatives, among them luxury real estate, top cars, and weapons.
  • On the evening of 18 January, law enforcement officers put Roman Hrynkevych on the wanted list.
