Details: The amendments bring the law into line with the updated Constitution and, among other things, determine guarantees for the president and his family upon the termination of his mandate.

As the media outlet Radio Svaboda has previously reported, a president whose mandate has been terminated will have the following rights:

  • to become a delegate to the All-Belarusian National Assembly and, with his consent, a lifelong member of the Council of the Republic (this does not apply to a president who has ceased to exercise his powers due to the inability to perform his duties for health reasons);
  • lifelong state protection;
  • immunity, i.e. he "cannot be held liable for actions committed in connection with the exercise of his presidential powers" and cannot be detained or brought to trial in this regard; in addition, his family members will also have immunity;
  • residential and office premises, transport, communications, other property and documents of the ex-president and his family will also be inviolable;
  • the ex-president retains the right to "presidential" medical care and transport services;
  • life and health insurance for the ex-president will be funded by the republic budget;
  • a lifelong monthly allowance equal to the salary of the current president as established by law;
  • upon his resignation, the president will receive a gift of state property, namely a land plot with capital buildings located on it.

The amendments also establish that the president of Belarus must be a citizen who is at least 40 years old, has resided in the republic for at least 20 years prior to the elections, and does not hold a foreign residence permit.
