Ukraine's Defence Minister introduces new commander-in-chief to General Staff and thanks Zaluzhnyi

Defenсe Minister Rustem Umierov has introduced the new commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, to the General Staff at a ceremony also attended by former commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

Quote from Umierov: "I also thanked General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who was present at this event, for his leadership at a challenging time and for the work he did.

Background:

  • Earlier on Thursday, Zelenskyy and Zaluzhnyi simultaneously reported having had a joint meeting and said they had discussed changes in the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  • Zelenskyy appointed Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  • Mykhailo Podoliak, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, said that the need to review military tactics and prevent stagnation at the front was one of the reasons why Valerii Zaluzhnyi had been dismissed as commander-in-chief.
