Russian leader Vladimir Putin has congratulated Donald Trump on assuming the office of US president and said he is ready for dialogue regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Quote from Putin: "Moscow congratulates Trump on assuming office... Moscow is open to dialogue with the new US administration on the Ukrainian conflict."

Details: According to the report, Putin emphasised that the goal should be "not a short-term truce, but a long-lasting peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all the peoples living in this region".

Quote from Putin:  "Russia assumes that dialogue with the US will be built on an equal and mutually respectful basis." 

More details: Putin also claims that "Russia has never refused dialogue with any US administration".

He said he welcomes Trump's remarks about the need to do everything possible to prevent a Third World War.

At the same time, Putin emphasised that the Russian authorities will continue to "fight for the interests of their people".

Background: According to CNN, citing its own sources, US President-elect Donald Trump has instructed his aides to arrange a call with Putin in the days following his inauguration on 20 January.
