Norway joins 17th EU sanctions package against Russia

The Norwegian government has announced that it will implement measures aligned with the European Union’s 17th package of sanctions against Russia.

Details: The new EU sanctions adopted by Norway target nearly 200 vessels from the shadow fleet Russia uses for oil sales, as well as individuals and entities that support the Russian military-industrial complex.

"These sanctions send a clear message that Norway and the EU continue to exert pressure on Russia," said Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

He described Norway’s alignment with the sanctions as "an important contribution to Europe’s collective pressure on Russia for its illegal war of aggression".

Background: 

  • On 20 May, the Council of the EU adopted the 17th package of sanctions against Russia for its war against Ukraine and separate measures for the use of chemical weapons against Ukraine.
  • Switzerland has joined these restrictive measures.
