Quote: "Yesterday [6 November – ed.] a memorandum was signed between one of the Ukrainian companies and Saab on the future localisation of Gripen in Ukraine. We expect that from 2033, Gripen will be significantly localised in Ukraine – from large-unit assembly to the production of individual components."
Details: Shmyhal said Ukraine insists that the earlier-generation C and D models of the Gripen aircraft should arrive as soon as 2026.
He added that discussions also included the possibility of starting the training of Ukrainian pilots and mechanics early next year to synchronise personnel preparation with the delivery of the first Gripen jets.
The minister also announced the creation of two working groups.
Quote: "The first working group is technical – to prepare for the reception and use of the aircraft here in Ukraine. The second is a financial working group that will handle the details of the contract.
Since this contract will be the largest ever on the European continent, it is a truly landmark agreement for us, for Sweden, and for Europe as a whole, requiring very thorough preparation."
For reference: Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a Swedish multirole fighter jet developed by Saab. It is used for air combat, ground strikes and reconnaissance. The aircraft is known for its manoeuvrability, advanced electronics and ability to take off from short runways. Its maximum speed is about 2,200 km/h, with a combat radius of up to 800 km.
