Macron explains why allies cannot send troops to Ukraine now

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that sending troops to Ukraine at this stage would amount to escalation and risk losing control of the situation.

Details: Macron emphasised that there is no evidence Russia is genuinely seeking a compromise in peace talks.

"They are still bombing. They are bombing civilians. They are procrastinating. What they are doing quite deliberately is banking all the concessions being made by negotiators. They are simply buying time. So we have to organise ourselves to last and resist," he said.

"Today, if we engage and send troops on the ground in this situation, we take responsibility for escalation," the French president added.

He also noted that there is currently no consensus among allies on sending troops.

"We would be responsible for triggering probably a loss of control of the situation. What is important for us now is to deliver the package we voted for," Macron said.

He stressed the importance of a shared understanding of the situation with the US.

"I think our top priority in the weeks to come should be to re-engage with the US, assessing with us the fact that there is no room for credible short-term negotiations and putting additional sanctions and actions against the shadow fleet and increasing pressure on the Russian economy in order to clearly stop this war, but in a much better situation," Macron explained.
