Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said in a video address that the actions of the United States, Israel and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "will ultimately force the EU to sober up", "learn a lesson" and rid itself of "blinkers" regarding Russia.

Details: Fico believes "nobody and nothing" will help Slovakia in "the worst crisis" and therefore he is convinced that it is now extremely important to use all "political and legal instruments" to protect its interests.

Quote: "I want to express my conviction that the antics of the United States, Israel and the President of Ukraine will force the European Union to learn a lesson and rid itself of ideological blinkers and obsession regarding the Russian Federation."

Details: Fico also announced that his country is filing a lawsuit against the EU in connection with the cessation of Russian gas supplies, which is to take final effect in October next year.

Quote: "I am not the only one who cannot imagine what repercussions this will have for the energy security of both the Union itself and Slovakia. This is not about politics – it is about rationality and elementary fairness."

More details: Fico also repeated that he will not support the adoption of a new sanctions package "until President Zelenskyy restores the operation of the Druzhba pipeline".

"Today even the most remote communities understand that nothing happened to the pipeline itself and its stoppage was used as an instrument of influence on the elections in Hungary," he added.

In the same video, he complained that Lithuania and Latvia will not allow his aircraft to pass through their airspace on his way to the 9 May Victory Day parade in Moscow. [Victory Day is a Russian holiday commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, celebrated on 9 May – ed.]

Background: Slovak Justice Minister Boris Susko stated on 17 April that the country will file a lawsuit against the EU next week over its decision to stop imports of Russian gas and oil.
