EU urges Russia to stop attacks on nuclear sites in Ukraine ahead of Chornobyl disaster anniversary

Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and the European Commission have released a joint statement ahead of the 40th anniversary of the 1986 Chornobyl nuclear disaster.

Details: The statement said that 40 years ago, the disaster at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant became one of the worst nuclear accidents in human history, with its true scale concealed by Soviet authorities and only becoming clearer over time.
Quote: "To this day, its legacy remains a stark reminder that ensuring nuclear safety depends on transparency, robust safeguards and international cooperation. Yet today, Moscow's relentless strikes on Chornobyl's 'New Safe Confinement'... undermine decades of international efforts and investment amounting to €2.1 billion, to mitigate the consequences of the disaster."
More details: The EU also pointed out that Russia's illegal seizure and prolonged occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant significantly increase risks to human life and the environment. It added that Moscow's persistent attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure jeopardise the stable energy supply needed for the safe operation of nuclear facilities.
Quote: "On this gruesome anniversary, we call on Russia to immediately cease all attacks on nuclear facilities in Ukraine and to comply with the Seven Indispensable Pillars for Nuclear Safety and Security during an armed conflict. Russia will be held accountable for putting public safety in danger, must compensate for the damage caused and return full control of the Zaporizhzhia plant to Ukraine."
Background:
- A Russian loitering munition carrying a high-explosive incendiary warhead struck the shelter of Unit No. 4 at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant on the night of 13-14 February. The damage caused to the shelter was significant.
- Kallas condemned the Russian drone strike on the Chornobyl plant, saying it once again demonstrated that Russia was not seeking peace.
