Quote: "We see how courageously and heroically the people of Iran are fighting for their independence and sovereignty."
Details: The conversation took place on 26 April.
Putin also said that "Russia will do everything to ensure that peace in the Middle East is achieved as soon as possible".
Pezeshkian thanked Russia for its solidarity with the Iranian people.
This was at least the third phone call between Putin and Pezeshkian since the start of the war.
In addition, a meeting between Putin and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi took place in St Petersburg.
During the talks, Putin said that "Russia, like Iran, intends to maintain our strategic relations".
Background:
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stated that the United States had ignored convincing evidence that Russia was helping Iran attack American bases in the Middle East because Washington "trusts" Putin.
- Iran has also put forward a new peace proposal to the US, which includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, extending the ceasefire or potentially agreeing on a full end to the conflict, while postponing nuclear negotiations to a later date.
- Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would not travel to Pakistan for talks with Iran and added that Iran could call the United States to negotiate an end to the war.
