Details: It said in the decree that the simplified citizenship procedure now applies to adult foreign nationals and stateless persons permanently residing in Transnistria at the time the document comes into force.
They will no longer be required to meet the conditions of five years' residence in Russia nor to confirm knowledge of the Russian language, Russian history or the fundamentals of Russian legislation.
Applications can be submitted through Russian diplomatic missions and consular offices. The decree states that the decision was taken "in order to protect human and civil rights and freedoms".
Background:
- Moldovan President Maia Sandu believes that a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the unrecognised region of Transnistria is possible thanks to Ukraine keeping Russian forces far from Moldova's borders.
- Moldova declared representatives of the command of the Operational Group of Russian Forces, illegally stationed in unrecognised Transnistria, persona non gratae.
