Kallas: Russia not in strongest position, China could help force it to end the war

Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, believes that Russia is currently not in a sufficiently strong position in its war against Ukraine and therefore must be pushed to the negotiating table – something that China could help achieve.

Details: Kallas made the remarks on Monday 18 May before the start of a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on development issues.
She argued that Russia is currently in a weak negotiating position regarding ending the war in Ukraine.
Kallas said that, as far as Ukraine was concerned, the peace negotiations had reached a deadlock.
She added that nothing was currently happening in the peace process.
Meanwhile, Kallas said that Russia was not in the strongest position and that efforts were needed to bring Moscow to the negotiating table.
Responding to a question about China's possible role in peace talks, Kallas noted that China, which has close relations with Russia, could play a role in convincing Moscow to stop the war.
Background:
- As previously reported by European Pravda, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna recently said that Russia is weakening and that now is the time not for negotiations, but for pressure.
- Gitanas Nausėda has also argued that there is no point in engaging in dialogue with Russia until it demonstrates readiness to end its full-scale war against Ukraine.
- An informal meeting of EU foreign ministers on Cyprus on 27–28 May is expected to include discussions on possible EU negotiations with Russia and the demands the bloc should make of Moscow.
