US warns Russia against strikes on Kyiv at UN Security Council, calls for immediate ceasefire

Tammy Bruce, US Deputy Representative to the United Nations, has described the large-scale Russian strikes on Kyiv as an "inexplicable, dangerous and barbaric escalation" that is "obscene and unacceptable". She called for a ceasefire and reminded Russia of its "legal obligations", stressing that diplomacy is "the only path forward towards lasting peace".

Details: Bruce noted that the strikes on Ukraine, including the use of Oreshnik ballistic missiles, had resulted in civilian deaths and left more than a hundred people injured.
Quote: "The latest mass strikes against Kyiv by Russia over the weekend, including the deployment of the Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missiles, are an inexplicable, dangerous, and barbaric escalation."
Details: Bruce also pointed out that "museums, public transportation infrastructure, residential buildings, and more were destroyed or damaged".
Deliberate attacks against civilians "are obscene and unacceptable", Bruce stressed, expressing her condolences to everyone who was affected.
The US has warned Russia against what it described as systematic strikes on Kyiv, which could increase the number of casualties and further undermine prospects for peace.
Bruce also expressed "serious concern" over Russia's failure to comply with its obligations under international law to protect diplomatic facilities and personnel.
"We remind Russia, in clear terms, of its legal obligations," she stressed, adding that "diplomacy and negotiations are the only path forward towards lasting peace".
Quote: "The United States once again calls for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire as a step towards a durable, negotiated end to the war."
Details: According to Bruce, "the alternative is escalating violence that will spiral out of control. That is unacceptable".
She emphasised that the US is ready to play a constructive role if the parties demonstrate a genuine willingness to achieve peace.
