US President Donald Trump announced on the evening of 11 June that he is cancelling planned strikes on Iran, as the "final points" of an agreement between the two sides have been approved.

Quote: "Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening."

Details: Trump stated that "discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved". He listed the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Türkiye, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt as countries involved in the approval.

Quote: "The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalised – time and place of the signing to be announced shortly."

Background:

  • This is not the first time Trump has hinted that a deal with Iran is close. Previous such statements have not been justified.
  • Earlier the same day, Trump declared that US forces would be "hitting Iran VERY HARD" that night.
  • On 9 June, the US president claimed that a peace deal with Tehran could be reached in "two or three days".
