Quote: "On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the Russian people on Russia Day.
The United States remains committed to advancing a peaceful solution to the Russia-Ukraine war. We remain hopeful that a durable peace will pave the way towards a more prosperous future for the Russian people and a more constructive relationship between our two countries."
Background:
- Rubio also issued a Russia Day greeting last year.
- In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said he had found it "unpleasant" to read the congratulations extended by "certain countries" on Russia Day.
- In May, Rubio acknowledged that peace negotiations on Ukraine have stalled but said Washington is willing to continue mediating if the talks become constructive.
- Trilateral talks between Ukraine, the US and Russia have effectively stalled since the US-Israeli war against Iran began in late February. Ukraine and Russia have, however, maintained bilateral contact with the US.
