Ukraine's Special Operations Forces strike Sevastopol Thermal Power Plant: nearly 50% of occupied Crimea's generation affected

Ukraine's Special Operations Forces (SOF), together with Deep Strike units, reportedly struck the Balaklava Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in temporarily occupied Sevastopol, Crimea, on the night of 13-14 July.

Details: Early information indicates damage to the turbine hall, including the cooling system of a Siemens SGT5-2000E turbine. If pumping equipment was also damaged, repairs could take between 2 and 5 months.

The Balaklava TPP is described as a key energy facility on the peninsula. Together with the Tavriiska TPP in Simferopol, it provides about 90% of Crimea's electricity consumption – making them the backbone of local power generation.

Quote from SOF: "Occupied Crimea is a military-logistics hub for the Russian army.

Stable electricity supply is critically important for communication nodes, command centres, radar stations, electronic warfare systems, air defence systems, repair facilities, the Black Sea Fleet, military airfields and other infrastructure.

Strikes on power generation facilities in Crimea significantly undermine Russia's offensive and defensive capabilities, reducing operational tempo and the resilience of rear support."

Background: In temporarily occupied Crimea, the situation with energy supply is worsening due to strikes by Ukraine's defence forces on energy infrastructure facilities. Regions are regularly left without electricity, sometimes for several days, and in most cases there are not even power outage schedules.
