Zelenskyy tells Trump: Xi Jinping "has influence on Putin" and should join peace talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that during his meeting with US President Donald Trump, he argued that Chinese leader Xi Jinping should be involved in negotiations to end Russia's war against Ukraine.

I said to the President, very openly, that we think if he also engages President Xi – he has influence on Putin.

If we want to end this war, not just in messages, we all have to work 24/7 for this, for the people."

Background:

• Zelenskyy said at a press conference after talks with Trump that he is ready to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin and that the White House could help organise a trilateral meeting.
• In addition, Zelenskyy reported that the US would convey Ukraine's proposal for an energy truce to Russia.
